At a glance: Social Studies

The department emphasizes research and writing and encourages students to present their findings at professional meetings. This is an important factor in helping our graduates find employment. Visits to high school classrooms early in your career will help you decide if teaching is the right choice. Social Studies majors also earn a second major in History, as well as the equivalent of a minor in professional education. Students may do their student teaching in a variety of settings that range from small towns to large urban schools, and can include international opportunities. Visit the department's web site. Visit the Department of Education for more information on teacher licensure program.

  • The Social Studies major emphasizes students combining classroom content with practical experience, and student teaching experiences are offered in nearby high schools or even in international schools.

Facilities

The department is located in the most historic building on Ohio Northern’s campus, Hill Memorial Building. Hill is the oldest building on campus, but it houses the latest in instructional technology, a computer laboratory and a welcoming environment for students and faculty alike. Hill is in the process of a multi-year renovation.

Program outcomes

Our graduates have been successful at finding positions in the local area as well as in states such as Maryland, North Carolina, Texas, and Arizona, among others.

Professional placement

Students work in a wide range of internships through the Washington Center. In past years, HPJ students have worked as interns with the U.S. Marshals, The Smithsonian Institution, U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader John Boehner's Office, and have completed their student teaching in Switzerland and England. This only scratches the surface of the exciting opportunities open to our students, and many of them have used the connections made there to find job positions following graduation.

Students have taken advantage of study abroad opportunities in Spain, South Korea, Cuba, Great Britain, Chile, France, and many other nations.

Career opportunities

Our graduates are finding work in exciting jobs with the U.S. Secret Service, state and local historical societies, public schools from New Hampshire to Southern California, the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, Congress, and the Ohio Supreme Court.
