Personalized Medicine

The Raabe College of Pharmacy is embarking on an incredible scientific journey to increase focus on pharmacogenetic education within its curriculum and involvement. Personalized medicine is the future of the pharmacy profession, and Ohio Northern is once again at the forefront of transforming the process of educating pharmacy students.

“We are the only school of pharmacy to put a six-year emphasis on pharmacogenetic training” says Dr. Jon E. Sprague, dean of the college, who, along several members of the college faculty, is writing a textbook to improve health care provider understanding of the use of pharmacogenetics in patient care. The college is working with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in developing a national pharmacogenetics certification program.

“Personalized Medicine refers to the tailoring of medical treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient … to classify individuals into subpopulations that differ in their susceptibility to a particular disease or their response to a specific treatment. Preventative or therapeutic interventions can then be concentrated on those who will benefit, sparing expense and side effects for those who will not.” — President’s Council on Advisors on Science and Technology

“The Raabe College of Pharmacy is a leader in providing pharmacogenetic education to pharmacists and other health care providers.”
Jon E. Sprague, R.Ph., Ph.D.

“In history, we rarely have the opportunity to be part of something that promises to profoundly change our world. In medicine, in pharmacy, it is genomics, and our students understand this is the 'here and now' future of our profession.”
David Kisor, R.Ph., B.S., Pharm.D.

“Personalized medicine involves the utilization of patient-specific DNA biomarkers to PREDICT the efficacy and safety of prescription drugs in a given patient.”
Michael Kane, Ph.D.

“Personalized medicine is the future of health care, and pharmacogenetics is how it will be realized.”
Jeffery N. Talbot, Ph.D.
