‘Returning to the Light’ exhibit scheduled

Ohio Northern University’s Department of Art and Design and the Cultural Affairs and Special Affairs committee presents “Returning to the Light,” a ceramic installation exhibit by Charlie Cummings, in the Elzay Gallery of Art from March 11 to April 12.

A reception with the artist will be held March 13 from 5 to 7 p.m., and a clay and transfer image workshop will be conducted from March 11-14.

Cummings is known for creating artwork that combines ceramics and printmaking. His sculptural artwork is unified by overlying ideas of nostalgia and absence. In “Returning to the Light,” the endangered springs of northern Florida serve as a metaphor for the fleetingness of experience in his current suite of full-color ceramic prints. These prints attempt to fix moments from visits to this surreal and sublime environment in clay and in time.

Cummings is a studio artist, teacher and director of the Charlie Cummings Gallery in Gainesville, Fla. He has curated more than 70 exhibitions and taught several workshops. His work is in many public and private collections, including that of the Crocker Museum and the Dalai Lama.

The Elzay and Stambaugh galleries are educational art galleries for the ONU community and for the northwest central Ohio region. The gallery season is designed to serve as a cultural resource, to host national and international touring exhibitions and programs, and to host original exhibits distinctly suited to an academic environment.

Admission to the Elzay and Stambaugh galleries is free and open to the public daily from noon to 5 p.m. The Stambaugh Studio Theatre Gallery also is open prior to Freed Center events.
