The ONU Department of Education is a community of dedicated faculty committed to providing quality instruction in the knowledge of the learner, knowledge of the discipline and knowledge of pedagogy. When these areas of knowledge are integrated, the end result is an enabling teacher who can prepare students with diverse backgrounds and abilities to contribute both individually and cooperatively to the common good of the larger society. Licensures offered

ONU education majors receive either a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree in the following licensure areas:

  • Early childhood education pre K-3
  • Early childhood generalist endorsement 4-5
  • Middle childhood education 4-9
  • Middle childhood generalist endorsement 4-6


Students with an interest in teaching at the secondary level (7-12) major in the subject area and complete course work in the Education Department to fulfill requirements for teacher licensure.  The teacher licensure areas offered at ONU follow:

  • Integrated language arts 7-12
  • Integrated mathematics 7-12
  • Integrated social studies 7-12
  • Integrated science 7-12
  • Life sciences 7-12
  • Physical sciences: Physics and Chemistry 7-12
  • Physical sciences: Chemistry 7-12
  • Physical sciences: Physics 7-12


Students with an interest in teaching at the primary or secondary level (preK -12)will major in the subject area and complete course work in the Education Department to fulfill requirements for teacher licensure:

  • Foreign languages (French, Spanish, German) preK-12
  • Music education preK-12
  • Visual arts education preK-12
  • Technology education 4-12

Distinctive features

The Department of Education houses seven full-time faculty members dedicated to preparing prospective teachers through general education, subject area concentration and professional education experiences that enable teacher education candidates to enter the profession of teaching with competency.

Students interested in teaching in the STEM areas (sciences, technology, engineering education, mathematics) can apply online for the Choose Ohio First Scholarship. Students meeting the requirements can receive up to an additional $6,500 per year.

Facilities

The Center for Teacher Education is located at the front of campus on the third floor of Dukes Memorial. The center offers state-of-the-art classrooms and labs equipped with instructional and SMART Board technologies. The center also encourages candidates by offering experiences with pre-school children through a partnership with the Child Development Center located on the north end of campus.

Program outcomes

ONU is one of the few private universities to offer a distinctive blend of quality liberal arts and professional programs. It is ranked No. 2 among Midwest Baccalaureate Colleges in U.S. News & World Report, “America's Best Colleges” (2013).

100 percent of teacher education candidates who graduated in 2012 passed their Praxis II exam.


Career opportunities

PayScale ranks Ohio Northern University among the top in the state of Ohio for its return on college investment (ROI). ROI is a function of two things: how much students spend to earn a degree, and how much graduates earn. ONU placed 252 out of 1248 (top 21 percent) institutions nationwide and 135 out of 458 private colleges (top 30 percent).

Ohio Northern graduates rank in the top ten for median starting salary among private non-profit colleges and universities.

Recent graduates teach in Ohio, Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Maryland and elsewhere. Nearly two-thirds of recently placed graduates report teaching within Ohio.

In the spotlight
