Management involves planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Management majors analyze and formulate approaches to problem solving in a constantly changing business environment. Distinctive features
Students develop a knowledge base in management theory, accounting, managerial finance, international business, economics, human resources, marketing, economics and international management. Managers hone their communications and interpersonal skills and work to understand their individual management styles.
management majors are required to participate in an internship during their junior or senior year. Statistics reveal that more than 50 percent of student internships become full-time employment opportunities upon graduation.
Facilities
Opened in 2003, James F. Dicke Hall offers “smart” classrooms equipped with the latest instructional technology. Open computer labs have the latest hardware and software for student use. A cast-bronze polar bear greets visitors to the two-story glass faced atrium, known as the “Central Business District,” which also has a real-time stock ticker. Throughout the building, beautiful artwork graces the walls, and there are comfortable alcoves for informal gatherings.
Student organizations
The Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) provides opportunities for members to increase their management skills and expertise. Members participate in programs and services designed to improve the professional quality of their knowledge, performance and leadership abilities. Sigma Iota Epsilon is an honorary and professional fraternity that encourages scholastic excellence and promotes cooperation between the academic and practical aspects of management.
Program outcomes
The College of Business Administration has programs in place, including a full-time director of experiential learning, to assist students with internship acquisition, job placement upon graduation and student-employer networking events held in major cities.
Professional placement
The James F. Dicke College of Business Administration management graduates seek careers in human resources, general management, and small-business and international management. Potential career paths include administrative services, computer information systems, construction, event planning, marketing, advertising, public relations, team leadership, financial services, medical and health services, hotel and lodging, human resources, industrial production, property and real state, purchasing and supply chain and logistics.Recent graduates go on to graduate or professional schools or embark on successful careers with companies such as Cardinal Health, Crown Equipment Corporation, Deloitte and Touche, Ernst & Young, Fifth Third Bank, Honda of America, J.P. Morgan Chase, KPMG, The Marriott Company, Metakote Corporation, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Nabisco, Sherwin Williams and Whirlpool Corporation.
Graduate schools
Some graduates have gone on to get advanced degrees at Case Western Reserve University, University of Notre Dame, University of Colorado, University of South Carolina MIBS, University of Virginia and Indiana University.
