Our computer engineering program provides a strong foundation and hands-on experiences in hardware design (circuits, signal processing, electronics, embedded and computer systems) and software design (programming, networks, and operating systems).
Each program in the ECCS department shares the same goals of producing high quality graduates through a broad-based curriculum that stresses fundamentals and the development of a professional work ethic. Many of our courses offer accessible, hands-on, practical laboratory experiences using relevant equipment and disciplined practices.
Computer engineering is a fast growing field with many opportunities. Computer engineers are trained problem solvers who understand both the hardware and software aspects of computers. Our program provides students with challenging hand-on experiences through a broad-based, rigorous curriculum providing exposure to various programming languages and development tools in their software courses, practical labs featuring up-to-date equipment in their hardware courses, and coverage of such advanced areas as embedded systems design, networks, signal processing, and software engineering.
An Advanced Energy Concentration is also available. The concentration requires both specific and elective energy relevant courses as displayed in the document below called “Computer Engineering Advanced Energy Concentration Curriculum Guide”.
Program Educational Objectives
Graduates of the computer engineering program are expected to attain the following attributes:
- Success in their chosen career

- A predisposition toward practicing the professional, ethical, and moral responsibilities of computer engineers
- Readiness to accept challenging assignments and responsibilities
By the time of graduation, students majoring in computer engineering will have:
- An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
- An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
- An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
- An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
- An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
- An ability to communicate effectively
- The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
- A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
- A knowledge of contemporary issues
- An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
