Mathematics and statistics students present at Miami University Conference

Mathematics and mathematical statistics majors, Emily Barbee, a senior from Kingwood, Texas; Hannah DePriest, a senior from Findlay, Ohio; Johnathan Neville, a sophomore from Sidney, Ohio; James Rader, a sophomore from Findlay, Ohio, and Joanna Snyder, a senior from Fort Recovery, Ohio, presentedpapers at the Pi Mu Epsilon Student Section of the recent 40th Miami University Mathematics and Statistics Conference.

Barbee’s talk, “Are the Statistics Really Statistics?” dealt with misuses of statistics.

DePriest’s paper, “How Much Does One Point Matter?” considered some statistical aspects of the game of tennis.

Neville examined the role of a single game win/loss in the NFL playing season in his paper, “What Difference Can A Single Game Make?”

Rader’s talk, “Quantifying Defensive Ability in Baseball,” dealt with modifications of a player’s fielding percentage as a measure of defensive ability.

In her paper, “The Hot Hand,” Snyder considered the statistics of free throws to analyze basketball players’ shooting streaks.

The collective work of the ONU students was impressive; indeed, one whole session was devoted to our students’ presentations, says their advisors Dr. Larry Robinson, associate professor of statistics, and Dr. Ryan Rahrig, assistant professor of statistics.
