General Studies/General Sciences

"When I came to ONU, I was not sure which major I wanted to choose because there are so many opportunities here. Staying in general studies has allowed me to become familiar with teachers and students from many diverse fields of study. My advisor has been so helpful and encouraging to me because he helps me identify my strengths and guides me in the direction of my interests."

Andrew Wellmann
Major: General Studies

The College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio Northern University welcomes students who have not yet chosen their major fields and future careers. The College of Arts & Sciences provides such students with the flexibility in course selection and the academic advising that allows them to explore their options and ultimately make informed decisions about their futures.

General Studies

The general studies program allows students without a declared major to select courses during the freshman and sophomore years that will both fulfill their general education requirements and aid them in choosing a major field. Most students will enroll in four courses per quarter, chosen from the wide range of academic areas. These introductory courses allow students to evaluate their depth of interest in the field. The hours earned will count toward graduation requirements, regardless of whether or not the course becomes part of their major, minor or concentration.

General Sciences

The general sciences program is available to students with a strong interest in mathematics and science who are not yet prepared to declare a specific major during the freshman year. Students in this program will take a variety of courses in mathematics and sciences, such as biology, chemistry and related fields, before declaring a major as they enter the sophomore year.

Students in both programs take part in the First Year Experience (FYE), a carefully planned freshman seminar aimed at helping students adapt to college life. The students meet weekly with their instructor in the First Year Experience course. That instructor also serves as their academic advisor, building ongoing relationships until the students declare majors. At that time, the students move on to academic advisors from their major areas.

Distinctive features

  • Freshman orientation course designed to engage students in campus, social and academic life
  • One-to-one academic advising to aid in selecting a major and career field
  • Opportunity to explore areas of interest while completing general education requirements

Facilities

Both the general studies and general sciences programs are administered by the College of Arts & Sciences dean’s office, which is located on the second floor of Dukes Memorial on the southeast side of the campus.

Student organizations

Students in general studies and general sciences are encouraged to join the social and academic life of the University by taking part in any of nearly 200 student organizations, which range from Student Senate to Greek life, service groups and athletic teams.

Program outcomes

To help with the decision process, general studies and general sciences students, as well as all ONU students, have access to such computer programs as Strong Interest Inventory and FOCUS through the ONU Counseling Center. These programs help students determine how their interests and talents can be put to the best use. In addition, ONU’s Office of Career Services is available to help students find career opportunities.

Career opportunities

By exploring the many options of an ONU education, general studies and general sciences students have the opportunity to get to know their areas of interest and discover their passion before committing to a focused path of study.
