Teacher candidates in Technology Education complete an approved program of coursework, field experiences, and other requirements leading to the application for an initial Provisional Ohio Teaching License for grades 4-12 Technology. Candidates major in Technology Education in the Department of Technological Studies. Other coursework includes general education classes such as English, philosophy, western civilization, science, mathematics, and others, as well as professional education coursework in culture and schooling, developmental psychology, exceptional learners, technology, curriculum, classroom strategies, methods of teaching, and more. In addition, candidates spend time throughout the program in local classrooms completing professional experience requirements. Visit the department's web site.

Distinctive features

  • Ohio Northern University is the only private university to have programs accredited by the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE).
  • Students graduate with a high degree of technological literacy, as coursework and laboratory assignments emphasize research, design, experimenting and fabricating.
  • The Robotics Center of Excellence, powered by KUKA Robotics GmbH, provides students with hands-on design and programming experience using KUKA robots, controllers and software.Opportunities abound for professional internships at manufacturing, construction and other industry-related companies. These experiences enable students to earn money while enhancing their résumés.
  • A five-year school/work co-op program enables students to work off campus for at least three quarters of full-time employment arranged to fit personal and company needs.
  • Award-winning student organizations and national championship robotics teams every year since 1993.

Facilities

The department of technological studies is located in Taft Memorial, where students and professors have access to comfortable classrooms, wireless network services, and up-to-date and well-equipped instructional laboratory areas, including the Robotics Center of Excellence and the Digital Manufacturing and Simulation lab.

Program outcomes

Students who major or minor in technology have become robotic engineers, application engineers, process engineers, CAD/CAM programmers, construction managers, production supervisors and project managers. They have found employment at companies such as Kiewit, Kokosing Construction, Applied Manufacturing Technologies, General Dynamics Land Systems, Honda of America, KTH Industries, Norplas Industries, Wilson Sporting Goods, Boeing, Lockheed/Martin and more.
