Ohio Northern University’s mock trial program will host the sixth annual Polar Bear Invitational Mock Trial Tournament from Jan. 14-15. The competition will take place at ONU’s Pettit College of Law, Hill Building and Dukes Memorial. More than 400 students from 26 colleges and universities representing 25 states will participate in the tournament. Courtney Brown a junior in mathematics and German from Coldwater, Ohio, presented a paper on a class of absolutely irreducible polynomials in two variables over a finite field inducing the zero function. The presentation took place at the 2011 Undergraduate Mathematics Day, Nov.5, at the University of Dayton. The paper builds on a result of his advisor, Dr. Mihai Caragiu and obtains an explicit formula for a series of such polynomials.
