Art Education Major
The art education major is an intensive full-time teacher preparation program that enables students to earn a PreK-12 licensure as a teacher.
ONU's program is designed to prepare its candidates to be not only accomplished art educators, but also articulate advocates for the role of art in PreK-12 education. The curriculum involves partnerships with public schools and is designed so that students come to understand educational theory through personal experience in authentic teaching situations. For instance, students at Ohio Northern plan and teach a group of middle school students participating in the Saturday Morning Arts (SMArts) program. Also, ONU teacher candidates complete 12 weeks of student teaching experiences in an elementary public school and in a secondary public school.
The ONU Center for Teacher Education program is recognized by Ohio’s Department of Education as an approved teacher preparation program, which means that ONU graduates meet requirements for licensure in art PreK-12. Students need to be aware, however, that in order to qualify for teacher certification they must meet all academic and experience requirements, pass any exams (e.g. Praxis) of teacher knowledge designated by the state in which licensure is sought, as well as any other unique requirement(s) designated by the State of Ohio.
An essential feature of Ohio Northern’s program is the involvement of the art education faculty in your future job search. The faculty takes particular pride in this relationship that has led to an extremely high placement rate for our graduates.
Like all students at Ohio Northern, art education majors participate within the broad range of courses taught through the undergraduate curriculum. The art education program primarily integrates art and design courses from the department of art & design, professional education requirements from the education department, and the liberal arts (general education) program.

My favorite thing to do during the day is working and socializing in the art studio. I hope that somewhere in the future I will have the privilege of sharing the gift of art with children. But, life is a journey. We’ll just have to wait and see.
