The department of art & design will unveil a new postage stamp that acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the Bachelor of Arts degree in art, “Latitude: Art & Design @ 50.” To order stamps, please contact the department office at 419.772.2160 (minimum order $2.20).

“What Lies Ahead:” Homecoming Exhibit To Showcase Art Alumni

The work of selected Ohio Northern alumni will be on exhibit during Homecoming on Saturday, October 9 at the Elzay Gallery of Art. An opening reception will also be held directly after the parade (approximately 11:15a.m.).

“Artists Against Hunger” Thanksgiving Luncheon and Fund-Raiser

Artists Against Hunger will be a fundraiser for several Hardin County non-profit organizations. Proceeds will help support Vista: Fight Poverty with Passion, Neighborhood Center, ReStore Community Center, The Backpack Program, Love Inc., Heart Beat and Helping Hands.

Paintings and Drawings Exhibit by Rob Price
Daily, noon–5p.m., Elzay Gallery of Art
Prof. Price, a retired faculty member from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, received his MFA degree in art education and art history at Ohio University. An Ada High School graduate, Rob briefly attended ONU in the early 1960s before receiving his bachelor’s degree at Miami University. He eventually taught painting, drawing and printmaking at UW-Stout during a 30-year career. In addition, he has taught for several years in England through the Fulbright Program. Influenced by abstract artists like Richard Diebenkorn and Francis Bacon, Rob uses the mix of figures and abstractions, as well as mixed media, in his work. Prof. Price is the keynote speaker for the gala celebration.

Influence: Paintings by Prof. James H. DeVore and Laura Barnhardt Corle

Prof. James H. DeVore received his Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees from Ohio University and taught for 37 years in the Ohio public school system, at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, and at Ohio Northern University before retiring in 1997. He is currently a member of the Central Ohio Watercolor Society and the Ohio Watercolor Society, where he served as recording secretary and on the Board of Trustees. He has exhibited in various local, state, and national exhibitions, some of which include the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Central and Western Ohio Watercolor Societies’ exhibits, the Ohio Watercolor Society, Adirondack National Exhibitions of America, Canton Art Institute, Toledo Museum of Art, Everhart Museum in Pennsylvania, Dayton Art Institute, Mansfield Art Center, All-Ohio Painting and Sculpture Biennial, Northwestern Ohio Artist exhibit in the governor’s mansion, Huntington Galleries in West Virginia, Precision Gallery, Online Computer Library Center, Combs Gallery and the Monypeny Gallery in Columbus, Zanesville Art Center, Cain Gallery in Chicago, and ADI Galleries in San Francisco and Tokyo. He has published several articles in national art publications, including an article entitled “Painting Atmospheric Effects in Watercolor” in American Artist magazine, “Yankee Realism” in Gallery, a book entitled Watercolor Paintings published by Ohio Northern University Press, and an article entitled “A Brief History of Watercolor Painting” in Polaris. There is an article on his life and work in Allied Publications Prize-Winning Graphics.
Laura Barnhardt Corle (BFA ’77) is currently an adjunct instructor in art at Ohio Northern where she teaches in the nursing completion program at Blanchard Valley Hospital. She has been with ONU since 2006. She is also a free-lance artist in the Findlay area, and teaches eight-week watercolor classes in her studio. Laura exhibits locally, regionally and nationally. Her work has been accepted in countless art shows. She also has participated in many art fairs and festivals such as the Ann Arbor Art Fair and the Black Swamp Arts Festival. She is a member of the Findlay Art League and has a studio in the Jones Building in Findlay.

The exhibition coincides with the department’s celebration of its 50th anniversary of the BA degree in art. The exhibit features one or two works by some of the ONU faculty members who are current or former full-time faculty associated with the university at some time since 1960, when the first bachelor’s of arts degree program was introduced. Born in 1950 in Sharon, PA, Marilyn studied at Ohio Northern University (BA in 1972), at the Centro Internazionale Di Studi in Verona Italy (1970-71) and at Washington State University (MFA in 1979). She has taught at various schools such as the Kansas City Art Institute, the Ohio State University and New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred. Marilyn has exhibited nationally and was recently featured in the February issue of Ceramics Monthly magazine. In 2000, she was a visiting artist in residence at Ohio Northern University’s department of art & design.
