Pharmacy student awarded Partners in Pharmacy scholarship

Ohio Northern University student Cortney Phillips, a sixth-year pharmacy major from Akron, Ohio, was awarded the Partners In Pharmacy scholarship from the National Community Pharmacy Foundation Association (NCPA).

Phillips was recognized for her exemplary academic performance, community service, and demonstrated commitment to independent pharmacy. Shewill receive $2,000 and will be recognized at the national NCPA convention in October.

Pharmacy student awarded scholarship

Cortney Phillips, a sixth-year pharmacy student from Perrysburg, Ohio, has been named recipient of a Partners in Pharmacy Scholarship. In addition to a $2000 scholarship toward tuition and books, she will also be attending the NCPA (National Community Pharmacists Association) Annual Convention in San Diego, Calif.

The scholarships are awarded based on leadership qualities, academic achievement and demonstrated interest in a career in independent pharmacy.

Pharmacy student’s poster presentation garners third at national convention

Ohio Northern University student Megan Bensi, a fifth-year pharmacy major from Kirtland, Ohio, garnered third place in a student poster presentation at the Drug Information Association (DIA) 2012 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia on June 24-28.

At the convention, Bensi competed against 20 graduate-level students. Her poster, titled “Evaluating Consumer Understanding of Prescription Label Information: An Assessment of USP 2011 Recommendations,” was chosen from a pool of more than 100 students in multiple disciplines from around the world.

Pharmacy students named to ASHP advisory groups

Two students from Ohio Northern University’s Raabe College of Pharmacy were appointed to prominent national positions within the student committees of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
 
Calvin Ice, a sixth-year pharmacy student from Rawson, Ohio, was named chair of the Pharmacy Student Forum Leadership Development Advisory Group for the 2012-13 academic year. Ice served on this committee in the 2011-12 academic year.

Allison is certified geriatric pharmacist

Jeffery C. Allison, professor of pharmacy practice, has successfully completed the examination to become a Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (CGP).

The Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy (CCGP) has over 1,700 Certified Geriatric Pharmacists, representing eight countries, 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Professor to speak at national pharmacy conference

 

Jenelle Sobotka, professor and endowed chair of pharmacy practice at Ohio Northern University’s Raabe College of Pharmacy, will deliver the closing session speech at the Texas Pharmacy Association’s Rxperts Conference and Expo in The Woodlands, Texas, on July 26-29.

Kisor takes part in genetics education discussion

David F. Kisor, professor of pharmacokinetics, took part in a meeting to discuss pharmacy education competencies related to genetics and pharmacogenetics, hosted June 19 by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of the National Institutes of Health. The meeting was specifically centered around the potential use of the Genetics/Genomics Competency Center (G2C2) by pharmacy. Kisor represented the Raabe College of Pharmacy in an ongoing effort to help keep the college on the forefront of pharmacogenetic/pharmacogenomic education.

Pharmacy student receives Cardinal Health Pharmacy Scholarship Award

Ohio Northern University student Katie Westgerdes, a fifth-year pharmacy major from Coldwater, Ohio, is ONU’s inaugural recipient of the Cardinal Health Pharmacy Scholarship Award. The Ohio Northern University Raabe College of Pharmacy was one of 13 pharmacy schools from across the nation selected in 2011 to receive funding from the $1.1 million Cardinal Health Pharmacy Scholarship Program.

Pharmacy begins educational partnership with Ghana

Ohio Northern University’s Raabe College of Pharmacy has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Pharmacy Council of Ghana and the school of pharmacy at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to begin preparations for implementing a doctoral program of pharmacy in Ghana.

The three groups will help KNUST transition its pharmacy education from the current bachelor’s to a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.This new partnership was sparked by a West African Health Organization initiative – of which Ghana is the lead country –to standardize medical education and the standard of care. With the region’s most advanced social, educational and political structures, Ghana has been selected to take the lead in moving West Africa’s pharmacy education forward.
