Boyd Rorabaugh, associate professor of pharmacology and cell biology at Ohio Northern University, has received the largest National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded research grant in the University’s history for his work investigating the role of regulators of G-protein signaling (RGS) proteins in cardiac ischemic injury. The total amount of the grant is $2,484,937, of which ONU will receive $347,235.

Pharmacy Student Selected for National Committee
Ryan Fischer, a fifth-year Ohio Northern pharmacy student from Spencerville, Ohio, has been selected to serve on the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) National Advisory Committee on Policy and Legislative Advocacy. The selection is a highly competitive process in which only 10 students nationally earn a spot on each committee.

Study Reveals New Target for Antidepressants
Ohio Northern University scientists with collaborators at the University of Michigan have provided the most detailed picture yet of a key receptor in the brain that influences the effectiveness of serotonin-related antidepressants, such as Prozac.
The findings, which appeared online Wednesday ahead of print in the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, open the door to providing a more targeted treatment of depression and anxiety with fewer side effects.

ONU to Recognize Academic Achievement at Honors Day
Ohio Northern University celebrates its 38th annual Honors Day program on May 8. Honors Day recognizes ONU students and faculty members for their distinguished scholarly achievement and service to the University community.
Honors Day has a rich tradition of ONU departments and colleges recognizing students for their academic achievements. Honors Day begins at 8:15 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. More than 40 undergraduate academic departments and honor societies will present awards and induct new members.

More than 70 Ohio Northern University students will participate in Ohio Northern’s fifth annual Student Research Colloquium in McIntosh Center on Saturday, May 1, beginning at 10 a.m.
The Student Research Colloquium celebrates academic achievement among Northern students of all disciplines by providing them the opportunity to present and discuss the results of their research to their fellow students, faculty and visitors to ONU’s campus.

ONU Alumni Receives Top Awards at Ohio Pharmacists Conference
Ohio Northern University alumni received six of the seven awards presented at the 132nd Ohio Pharmacists Association (OPA) annual meeting and conference in Columbus, Ohio from April 9-11. ONU students also competed in both the OTC Challenge and the Student Olympics at the OPA conference.

Broedel-Zaugg Named to Agency Board
Kimberly Broedel-Zaugg, professor of pharmacy practice, has been appointed to the board of trustees for the Area Agency on Aging, Area 3, formerly PSA 3.
The organization assists older adults, persons with disabilities and their caregivers in locating resources and services to promote consumer-directed options and independence in the community.
