At Donnelly family gatherings, Ohio Northern University is a popular topic of conversation because the entire family claims ONU as its alma mater.
Both Dennis Donnelly, BS ’70, JD ’76, and his wife, Ellen, attended Northern. The couple’s three children are ONU alumni, as well. “In fact, our oldest son was born on the night before my husband, Dennis, was scheduled to take a final exam for law school. He did pass!” she says with a laugh.
Needless to say, the Donnellys believe an ONU education is well worth the investment. “ONU has an excellent academic reputation,” said Ellen. “My husband and I felt good about sending our children to the University knowing that they would receive an education that would thoroughly prepare them for a career after graduation.”
The Donnellys' three children have each achieved success in their life and careers. John Donnelly, BS ’98, has worked for Mercy Ships in Africa and for an engineering firm as a language surveyor in Indonesia. Ann Donnelly, BA ’99, is the director of alumni relations at ONU. Mark Donnelly, BS ’04, works for an engineering firm in Dublin, Ohio. “The small classes, personal attention from professors and being with students who were hardworking and determined to succeed helped contribute to my success at ONU,” said Mark. “These habits and work ethics have carried over to my career and continue to help me be successful on my current job.”

“The investment in an ONU education for our children has been worth it. Besides the excellent education they received, our children met and were influenced by many wonderful people in the community and at the University. After graduating from ONU, all three were able to obtain good jobs,” says Ellen.
