Dr. Harold Putt receives Ohio Section MAA Award

Dr. Harold Putt, Ohio Northern University professor of mathematics and statistics, has received the 2012 Ohio Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics by the Ohio Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). Putt was honored at the association’s spring section meeting April 13.

This award recognizes teachers who are successful in their teaching, demonstrate documented effectiveness and influence beyond their college or university, and foster curiosity and generate excitement about mathematics in their students.

“Receiving this award is very special to me,” Putt said. “I have great respect for the Ohio Section of the MAA and its commitment to teaching excellence. Several past recipients of this award were my mentors as I prepared for this profession. I am humbled and honored to be on the list of individuals who have won this award.”

Putt has been active in the Ohio Section of the MAA, previously serving as president. He is a member of the Committee on Curriculum, Committee on Teacher Education and Licensure, Committee on Section Activities, as well as the program, teaching award and nominating committees. In addition to his involvement with the MAA, Putt served as an Ohio Board of Regents mathematics teaching fellow.

To be eligible for this award, nominee must be teaching at a college level. Nominees also must teach mathematical science courses at least half of their time throughout the academic year. In addition, candidates must have more than seven years experience teaching mathematical science and be a member of the MAA.
