ONU Students Take Top Honors in Vocal Performance

Seven Ohio Northern University students took top honors at the Buckeye Chapter of the National Association for Teachers of Singing (NATS) Student Auditions at Bluffton University on Saturday, Nov.4.

The competition is held annually and is sanctioned by the Great Lakes Region of NATS. The auditions are held for students at all stages of vocal study who perform in classifications with students of similar age and length of study. Each participant prepared three selections for the competition.

The “Lower Level Men and Women Musical Theatre” category is for those students who have completed 1-4 semesters or 4-6 quarters of study. In that category, Christina Wenning, a sophomore music and musical theatre major from St. Marys, Ohio, placed first and Christopher Chiles, a sophomore musical theatre major, also from St. Mary’s, place third. Their accompanists were Miguel Jordon, a senior music and chemistry major from Findlay, Ohio, and Jenna Makowski, a senior music and English major from Strongsville, Ohio. Freshman Michael Doyle, a musical theatre major from Delaware, Ohio, placed fourth in that division with Jenna Makowski accompanist

In the “Upper Level Men and Women Musical Theatre” category, junior music major, Adam Von Almen, from Lima, Ohio, placed second. Sarah Cushman, a junior music major from Geneva, Illinois, was his accompanist.

The winners each received an award certificate and a cash prize. First place winners in each classification performed in an honors concert at the end of the competition.

Other ONU students who participated include Lindsay Naiman, senior musical theatre major, Findlay, Ohio; Adrienne Peters, junior musical theatre major, Miamisburg, Ohio; Kenley Monson, junior musical theatre major, Powell, Ohio; and Allison Engel, junior music major, Hamilton, Ohio.

The Musical Theatre program at Ohio Northern University is one of the few programs in Ohio to offer a BFA, and is supported by a vigorous production schedule of three musicals per year.
