ONU graduate wins Cuban essay contest
ONU graduate wins Cuban essay contest
Jared R. Hardesty, a 2008 graduate of Ohio Northern University from Lima, Ohio, won the fourth annual Collegiate Essay Contest sponsored by the ONU Center for Cuban Business Studies.
His entry, "History on the Forbidden Isle: Historiography and Pop Culture in Castro's Cuba," was selected as the best paper submitted by a college student. Hardesty's paper was based on his research and personal experiences while studying at the University of Havana in ONU's environmental management program.
Hardesty was awarded a $500 prize.
Dr. Terry Maris, executive director of ONU's Center for Cuban Business Studies, said, "Jared is an outstanding young man and an exceptional scholar. He benefited greatly from his educational experience in Cuba."
ONU is one of a small number of American universities that is licensed by the U.S. Treasury Department to offer educational programs for its students in Cuba. The program began in 2001 as a means to better educate students on the past, present and potential relationships between the United States and Cuba.
