Jon E. Sprague, R.Ph., Ph.D.

Dr. Jon E. Sprague is professor of pharmacology and dean at the Raabe College of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University. Before returning to ONU as dean in 2006, Sprague was chair and professor of pharmacology at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine at Virginia Tech University. He received his Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology from Purdue University. His research interests include studying the hyperthermic mechanisms of the substituted amphetamines, namely 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, Ecstasy). One of Sprague’s major professional priorities is to assist implementing personalized medicine as a method to improve health care outcomes. Pharmacogenetic education is one such method for increasing the personalized medicine in health care. His focus on education and personalized medicine implementation has resulted in numerous publications. Sprague also is the co-founder and director of technology for Genomic Guidance LLC. He also holds a patent titled “Method for Utilizing Patient Genotyping for Drug Safety.”

At ONU, Sprague and his colleagues have increased the Raabe College of Pharmacy’s focus on pharmacogenetic education. ONU is the only school of pharmacy to put a six-year emphasis on pharmacogenetic training. Sprague and several members of the college faculty also are writing a textbook to improve health care provider understanding of the use of pharmacogenetics in patient care. The Raabe College of Pharmacy is working with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in developing a national pharmacogenetics certification program.

Quotes:

“The Raabe College of Pharmacy is a leader in providing pharmacogenetic education to pharmacists and other health care providers.”

“Dr. Kane is here at my invitation to improve the educational, data management and methods of patient intervention associated with the utilization of clinical genetic testing for the purposes of reducing adverse drug reactions and improving drug efficacy in health care.”
