The advanced mathematical studies concentration is designed for students who are passionate about mathematics and its promise of discovery. The mathematics universe is full of rich structures and novel surprises that perpetually generate new mathematical knowledge, theories, theorems and imaginary experiments that have ground-breaking applications in a wide range of fields. Students in this concentration explore the universe of “pure mathematics” with rigorous academics. The concentration requires the Calculus sequence, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Complex Variables, Programming 1 (offered by the T.J. Smull College of Engineering, this ensures basic computing skills that can facilitate mathematical discovery), and introductory upper level courses in abstract algebra and real analysis. In addition, students are required to select four electives from a robust list of options in consultation with their advisor. The electives should be aligned with the student’s specific area of intended research. Particularly attractive electives include Number Theory and Cryptography, and the Probability and Graphs course. Upon graduation, mathematics students will be well prepared to pursue graduate studies in pure or applied mathematics or physics and then choose from a variety of career opportunities at advanced research labs, institutes or universities.
