Future Pharmacy

For more than 125 years, the nationally recognized Raabe College of Pharmacy has offered distinctive, challenging and comprehensive training for some of the nation's most talented pharmacists. This University signature program features a six-year doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) degree accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education. The college has graduated pharmacists who now have successful pharmacy practices and who are active in local, state and national health-related organizations. Visit the college's web site.

Distinctive features

The doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program emphasizes patient-oriented practice. Graduates typically enter career tracks involving practice and consultant roles where the pharmacist is an integral part of drug selection and monitors therapeutic decisions. The doctor of pharmacy degree qualifies the graduate for licensure in all 50 states and a career in any number of exciting practice settings. As a “direct-entry” student, you will join the pharmacy profession as you enter the college, and you will work with a faculty dedicated to teaching as their number-one mission. This approach is unique as the program is the only one where students take pharmacy courses from the very first day. Research opportunities exist, and some graduates go on to doctoral programs in pharmaceutical research.

Facilities

The College of Pharmacy features state-of-the-art classrooms, research facilities, a Drug Information Center and the Pharmacy Skills Center. The College of Pharmacy is part of the science campus at ONU.

Professional placement

Our graduates enter a marketplace with a tremendous variety of professional opportunities. A small number of graduates pursue graduate studies; a larger number apply and are accepted to post-graduate residency and fellowship programs. The majority of graduates begin employment upon graduation.

Career opportunities

Growth in many areas of the pharmaceutical industry has led to an increase in community pharmacy and managed-care positions. Additionally, health care systems are hiring more pharmacy graduates because of their strong clinical skills and training. Pharmacists are increasingly involved in medication therapy management in the hospital, physician’s office and  community pharmacy. The future is bright with increased career opportunities expected in the next 10-15 years.

In the spotlight

Pharmacogenetics, geriatrics and health care reform will all have an impact on the future of the profession of pharmacy. We focus on these areas in our curriculum by providing continuing education to pharmacists all over the country.
