At a glance: Sociology

Did you know? Sociological investigation covers a broad range of subjects: human social behavior, social stratification and inequality, changing employment trends, an aging population, dynamics of behavior in bureaucracies, changing family roles, poverty, health care, education, crime and delinquency, family violence and the consequences of a growing interdependence among the world’s cultures.

Sociology enables students to analyze and comprehend some of the social forces that shape the structure of society, its institutions and its members. Sociology trains students in logical reasoning, critical thought and the evaluation of evidence, and communication skills. As the scientific study of human social behavior, sociology gives individuals the capacity to understand, explain and, ideally, improve the world in which they live. Visit the department's web site.
