August 27—September 21, 2012
Reception: Friday, August 31, 5-7pm
The MIMB project was created by Hui-Chu Ying, professor of art at the Myers School of Art, University of Akron. The project showcases the work of 140 artists. Many of the books use unconventional materials and innovative bookmaking techniques that include the best samples of contemporary print making ranging from the traditional to the latest digital printing processes. The books in this exhibit represent the work from artists in the USA, Korea, Japan, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Spain, India, Pakistan, the UK, Canada, Mauritius, and Argentina.
The Prints of Paul Jacoulet
Stambaugh Studio Theatre Gallery
September 3—December 14
The French artist Paul Jacoulet (1896–1960) lived in Japan most of his life. During a span of 26 years, he produced 166 masterfully printed color woodcuts inspired by his
travels to Japan, Korea, China, Mongolia and numerous islands of the South Pacific. His inventive compositions reveal a synthesis of traditional Japanese printing techniques with modern European aesthetics and are examples
of superb craftsmanship.
Beautiful Stories (Remix)
New Work by Patricia Bellan-Gillen
October 1—November 9, 2012 Elzay Gallery
Elzay Gallery of Art
Reception for the artist: Friday, October 5, 5-7pm
Artist’s talk: Friday, October 5, 5:30pm in room 115, Wilson
After years of studying cultural, dream, mythological and religious symbols, Patricia Bellan-Gillen found that the most interesting signs are the images that appear and keep pressing on one’s mind with no explanation.
Honoring these puzzling visages maps the direction that she has begun to follow in her paintings, prints and drawings. In very simple terms, she wants to make work that combines ideas and imagery generated through study and research with ideas and imagery that are felt, intuitive, and enigmatic.
Patricia Bellan-Gillen’s current body of work continues to build on the use of imagery that suggests a narrative, remixes our stories and attempts to engage the viewer’s associative responses: imagery that is at once forgotten but familiar. Her work also celebrates a return to drawing—the sheer love of the fundamental act of working with the most basic of materials.

louder than silence
site-specific installation by Dawn Gettler
Elzay Gallery of Art
January 18–February 22, 2013
Reception: Friday, January 18, 5–7p.m.
Dawn Gettler’s installations are inevitably temporary and exist permanently through documentation. There is rhythm in the labor of making that is not often apparent in a completed work. According to Gettler, the action of making can manifest into many things; it can be ugly, painful, and unforgiving; and more often than not, it can be beautiful. In many ways she hopes to create a more romantic and desirable memory for herself.
Selections from ONU’s Department of Art & Design Permanent Collection
Stambaugh Studio Theatre Gallery
January 14—March 1
The department’s permanent collection is a diverse array of work from professional artists and designers who have participated in the department’s visiting artist/designer series as well as alumni.
Returning to the Light
ceramic installation by Charlie Cummings
Elzay Gallery of Art
March 11–April 12, 2013
Reception: Wednesday, March 13, 5–7p.m.
Clay and Transfer Image Workshop: March 11–14. Call the art & design office for more details, 419-772-2160.
Charlie Cummings is known for his artworks that combine ceramics and printmaking. His sculptural artwork is unified by overlying ideas of nostalgia and absence. In Returning to the Light, the endangered springs of Northern Florida serve as a metaphor for the fleetingness of experience in his current suite of full color ceramic prints. These prints attempt to fix moments from visits to this surreal and sublime environment in clay and in time.
Right to Education Exhibit (student exhibit)
Stambaugh Studio Theatre Gallery
March 11—April 12
Every child in the world is guaranteed a primary education under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This dramatic exhibition, created by senior design students, endeavors to open the doors to the living laboratory that is our planet.
