AP and Transfer Credit Policy

The Ohio Northern Department of Art & Design welcomes students with advance standing. Students who wish to apply AP credit or to transfer credit to Ohio Northern University must file an application with the undergraduate admissions office and follow the established procedures.

Emily's workAP Policy in Art and Design
Students who have successfully completed an Advanced Placement (AP) course in high school are eligible to take a corresponding exam, which is administered in May.

Advanced Placement examinations are administered through the College Board to provide documentation of a level of achievement that qualifies a student for advanced standing. Credit is awarded for AP courses taken at the high school level if certain requirements are met. Credit awarded by another college or university for AP is not transferable without proper documentation. Official AP scores must be submitted to the office of admissions.

1. AP Art History: Credit is awarded based on an official score report of 4 or 5. Students meeting this standard may earn ONU credit toward ART 1651: Visual Literacy.

2. Studio Art 2-D Design: Credit is awarded based on an official score report of 4 or 5. Students meeting this standard may earn ONU credit toward ART 1101: Visual Foundations.

3. Studio Art 3-D Design: Credit is awarded based on an official score report of 4 or 5. Students meeting this standard may earn ONU credit toward ART 1501: 3D Design Foundations.

4. Studio Art: Drawing: Credit is awarded based on an official score report of 4 or 5. Students meeting this standard may earn ONU credit toward ART 1101: Visual Foundations.

University policy governing all AP credit may be found in the University Catalog and viewed on-line at the registrar’s office.

Transfer Credit Policy
Students who have completed collegiate coursework may be granted advanced standing. In assessing and documenting equivalent learning through course content and level of instruction, the department of art & design uses recognized guidelines that aid in the evaluation of credit, such as those published by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. This policy is consistent with the mission of the department and ensures that learning outcomes are at the collegiate level and comparable to the University’s degree programs.

Guidelines and Standards

  1. Credits to be transferred must be graded C (2.00) or higher in studio courses, and must be graded C (2.00) or higher in other academic courses.
  2. Course content must have been proven to be equivalent in course content at ONU. A review of all course syllabi may be required.
  3. For specific studio courses, a portfolio review (per studio course) is required. Portfolios are reviewed by faculty members. Transfer credit is granted only when faculty members assess that the quality of the work in the portfolio is equivalent to that which would earn a grade of a C (2.00) or better in a comparable course at Ohio Northern. Failure to submit a portfolio results in loss of opportunity to transfer studio credit.
  4. A maximum of 30 credit hours in art/design may be transferred to Ohio Northern. The final two semesters and the final credit hours in art/design must be earned at ONU. Students must also complete the Sophomore Participation for Juried Exhibit and Senior Capstone.
  5. A maximum of 6 credit hours in art/design may be transferred for a minor in art. The final 12 credit hours in art/design must be earned at Ohio Northern.
