Ohio Northern University Talent Awards in English

High school seniors who have been accepted to Ohio Northern University as English majors in the College of Arts & Sciences are invited to compete for Talent Awards beginning at $4,000, renewable annually as long as the student remains an English major and maintains a grade point average of 3.0 (B).

Following admission to the university, students must submit a portfolio of original writing by February 15. This collection should contain at least three, and no more than ten, writing samples (not to exceed thirty pages of written work) that will be judged by a panel of English professors.  The English Department will then make recommendations to the Financial Aid Office; their staff will make all final decisions regarding this award.

Portfolio items may include essays and research papers written for English classes, articles written for the school or other newspapers, original creative writing (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama or screenplay) and blog selections. We encourage students to submit a variety of material.  A note from a sponsoring English teacher must accompany the portfolio, attesting that the writing is the student’s own work.

Applicants should submit their typed material in an unadorned file folder or slim binder. The texts should be written in a standard typeface, without italics, except for artistic emphasis. Those submitting should not include any art objects or purely visual arts material, although hybrid text/visual entries are accepted, as well as short CD or video presentations.

The Talent Awards will be available to students regardless of what English Department track they intend to pursue: Literature, Professional Writing, Journalism, Language Arts Education, or Creative Writing.

Send portfolios to: Talent Awards, c/o Dr. Lisa Robeson, Chair; Department of English, Ohio Northern University, Ada, OH 45810 (419-772-2201).  Materials will not be returned.
