Dr. David Kosmyna

Biography: 

David Kosmyna, a native of Toledo, Ohio, teaches trumpet, theory, and jazz ensemble at Ohio Northern University. Prior to ONU, Kosmyna served on the faculty of the State University of New York at Fredonia and during the summers he teaches trumpet, chamber brass, and composition at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts at Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Toledo, a Master of Music in Composition from Ohio University (Athens) and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Dr. Kosmyna served as principal trumpet of, and performed as soloist with, the Western New York Chamber Orchestra. He has performed with the Kentucky Symphony, the Slee Sinfonietta (Buffalo, NY), the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, including a recording with the Pops on the TELARC label and broadcasts on National Public Radio. Dr. Kosmyna is active as a composer and arranger, and in 2007 the New York Philharmonic Brass Quintet performed some of his works in Fukui, Japan.

Dr. Kosmyna has recorded extensively in both classical and jazz styles and in 2003 was awarded Best Traditional Classic Jazz Album by the Canadian Collector’s Congress for his work with the Climax Jazz Band of Toronto, Canada. As a specialist in New Orleans style jazz, Kosmyna has toured throughout North America and in Europe and is in demand on cornet, trombone, piano, and banjo. He has also been a repeat guest soloist, performer, and lecturer at the Toronto Jazz Festival. Kosmyna’s 2007 performance at the Toronto Jazz Festival was recently broadcast on BBC Radio 2. Dr. Kosmyna is also highly committed to music education in the schools and frequently offers clinics on trumpet, brass playing, jazz, and musicianship throughout Ohio and the Mid-West. In addition, Kosmyna is actively involved with the International Trumpet Guild, having served at the coordinator for the 2008 ITG Solo Competition held in Banff, Alberta. Currently he serves as editor for the employment column of the ITG website.
