Brian Phillips

Biography: 

 

Brian Phillips graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1997 with a BA in Communication Arts-Theatre and a minor in Technology.  While a student at ONU, he studied at Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh, Scotland.  Brian began his professional career at the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival in High Point.  After serving as Technical Director for the Shakespeare Festival, he attended The University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston –Salem where, in 2001, he was awarded an MFA in Technical Direction.  While attending UNCSA, Brian worked for numerous local companies including High Point Ballet, Sandhills Ballet Theatre, and North Carolina Scenic Studios.  In 2001 Brian moved to Chicago to work for the Goodman Theatre as the Assistant Technical Director.  He was promoted to Technical Director in 2004 and held that post until July 2011.  During his tenure at the Goodman, Brian worked on over 30 world premier productions including works from Regina Taylor, Sara Ruhl, Steven Sondheim, and Arthur Miller.  Some of the productions he has worked on include: Finishing the Picture Directed by Robert Falls; The Long Red Road directed by Phillip Seymour-Hoffman; Turn of the Century Directed by Tommy Tune; Hollywood Arms Directed by Hal Prince.  He has toured with Goodman productions to the Kennedy Center, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Barbican Centre in London, England.  Brian’s last production at the Goodman, the world premier of Chinglish, transferred to Broadway in October 2011.  Brian is a member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Local 635

Professional Experience: 

Technical Director,  Goodman Theatre     Chicago, IL  2004-2011

·        Oversaw the implementation of the eight show season, the annual production of A Christmas Carol, and events.

·        Managed an annual scenery budget ranging from $750,000 to $1.5 million.

·        Responsible for the realization of scenic designs through technical, structural, and automation design.

·        Produced construction drawings for scenery, rigging, and automation fabrication.

·        Coordinated move to a 65,000 square foot scene shop in 2007.  Responsibilities included design, layout, and outfitting of the new facility.  

Assistant Technical Director, Goodman Theatre     Chicago, IL  2001-2004

·        Supported the Technical Director by drafting scenery, procuring materials, supervising crew, and budgeting and tracking expenditures per production.

·        Produced construction drawings for scenery, rigging, and automation fabrication.

·        As the production technical director, toured shows to the Kennedy Center, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Barbican Centre.
