ONU to host Scholarship Recognition Days

More than 250 top high school students from Ohio and the surrounding states will attend the first session of Ohio Northern University’s annual Scholarship Recognition Days on Saturday, Jan. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The Presidential Scholarship Recognition Day kicks off ONU’s honor scholarship evaluations, which run for three more weekends. Last year, the four scholarship events attracted more than 970 students.

A similar number is expected for the class of 2011. The scholarships will be awarded to leading students entering each of Ohio Northern’s undergraduate colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, and Pharmacy.

“These scholarship events are exciting opportunities for the exceptional students we have selected and admitted to ONU,” said Karen Condeni, ONU’s vice president and dean of enrollment. “We look forward to personally meeting the families and awarding significant dollars to many who will benefit from an ONU education.”

Special recognition of achievement scholarships also will be awarded to students demonstrating outstanding talents and distinctive achievements.

The Presidential Scholarship Recognition Day begins at 9 a.m. in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts for registration and refreshments. Condeni will deliver an opening welcome to prospective parents. Dustin Jarrett, assistant director of admissions, will greet prospective students.

Informational sessions for parents occur while accepted students have their opportunities for the evaluations. Current student scholars, faculty, staff and alumni assist in the programs. A luncheon then will be held for parents and students at the field house inside the ONU Sports Center, where more than 600 individuals are expected to be served.

Since 1987, Ohio Northern has held these unique annual scholarship recognition days to encourage students to pursue rigorous high school programs and to recognize and reward accomplished students. The evaluations include a series of tests, essays and interviews, and, in some cases, group challenges.
