Pharmacy student awarded Partners in Pharmacy scholarship

Ohio Northern University student Cortney Phillips, a sixth-year pharmacy major from Akron, Ohio, was awarded the Partners In Pharmacy scholarship from the National Community Pharmacy Foundation Association (NCPA).

Phillips was recognized for her exemplary academic performance, community service, and demonstrated commitment to independent pharmacy. Shewill receive $2,000 and will be recognized at the national NCPA convention in October.

During the 2011-12 academic school year, Phillips was Rho Chi president, a Pharmacy Council representative and the WestShore Pharmaceutical Group Scholarship recipient. Phillips also was ONU’s Continuous Achievement Scholarship recipient for the Raabe College of Pharmacy, the Walkup Pharmacy Compounding Award recipient and a member of the winning team during the OTC Self-Care Challenge at the 2012 Ohio Pharmacists Association (OPA) Annual Conference and Trade Show.

“The Partners in Pharmacy scholarship is the final stepping stone to push me into the path of my dreams within the profession of pharmacy,” Phillips said. “Following graduation, I hope to complete a community residency program focusing on compounding, independent ownership and teaching, so that I may one day own an independent pharmacy. This scholarship is the greatest honor and achievement of my collegiate career as it is recognition from a national organization that also sees the same potential that I do for independent pharmacy ownership to be the way that I can make a difference in the community around me and impact patient care for the better.”

Partners in Pharmacy is the former WONARD or the Women’s Organization of the National Association of Retail Druggists, which was founded in 1905 during the seventh NARD Annual Convention. (NARD, the National Association of Retail Druggists, formed in 1898 and was renamed NCPA, the National Association of Community Pharmacists in 1998.) Partners in Pharmacy is now an auxiliary organization that supports NCPA and the NCPA Foundation.

Since 1915, Partners in Pharmacy has offered scholarships to pharmacy students pursuing careers in pharmacy. All pharmacy students who are student members of NCPA are eligible to apply for the Partners in Pharmacy Scholarship. The student must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. school or college of pharmacy on a full-time basis during the academic term that the scholarship is awarded.
