There are two systemic assessment processes of student learning outcomes in place at ONU. One focuses on the University-level learning outcomes (University SLOs) embedded in General Education and co-curricular offerings, and the other process occurs at the academic major fields program level (Program SLOs).
UNIVERSITY-LEVEL LEARNING OUTCOMES
ONU regularly collects, analyzes, and reviews assessment data of the University-level learning outcomes (University SLOs) and makes necessary adjustments to improve student learning. The University Assessment Committee oversees the clarification and assessment of the University SLOs.
University SLOs for Undergraduates. The University-level learning outcomes for the undergraduates are identical to the general education outcomes. Graduate programs have no common set of learning outcomes at the University level; thus, learning outcomes are defined and assessed at the program level only for each of the graduate programs (Doctor of Pharmacy, Master of Science in Accounting, and Law).
Beginning with matriculation and continuing through their educational experiences at ONU, the University's students will demonstrate:
- Effective written communication
- Effective spoken communication
- Critical and creative thinking
- Knowledge of the physical and natural world
- Knowledge of mathematics and statistics
- Knowledge of human thought and culture
- Knowledge of human society and the interactions between society and individuals
- Knowledge of the principles of aesthetics
- Knowledge of the principles of civics or ethics on a professional, community, or global level
- An understanding of diverse cultures.
Measures of University SLOs. The University SLOs are assessed by multiple measures with a mix of direct and indirect methods.
- Course-embedded measures of General Education followed by faculty focus groups
- Co-curricular assessment measures
- Standardized and nationally normed tests (CLA+)
- Perceived student learning gains using national surveys (NSSE, College Senior Surveys)
- Alumni and Employer Surveys
PROGRAM-LEVEL LEARNING OUTCOMES
All academic programs provide annual assessment reports of student learning outcomes (Program SLOs). Assessment reports are composed of a comprehensive assessment plan (Part I) and a description of the ways the plan was implemented during the annual assessment cycle (Part II). Reports are evaluated by the University Assessment Committee using evaluation rubrics, and programs incorporate the feedback they receive from the Committee into the future assessment process.
