“Expect the unexpected.” Jacob Grant has heard this advice countless times on the soccer field at Ohio Northern University. And this summer, the sport management major is living it every day while interning with FC Cincinnati, a professional soccer club.

Jacob is aiding FC Cincinnati with soccer camps across the city for children aged 5 to 13. His responsibilities range from setting up the camps to coaching, communicating with parents and grandparents to organizing camp shirts, gear and equipment.

Needless to say, when dealing with youngsters, the “unexpected” often occurs.

“I can’t thank ONU soccer coach Chris Matejk, BA ’13, enough for always telling us to ‘expect the expected.’ This mentality has allowed me to keep my cool while coaching to be able to run an enjoyable camp.”

Jacob added that he’s learning about leadership as well as having fun.

“This internship is shaping my future positively. Every day I’m improving my communication skills and learning how to coach and manage a group of people. I’m also constantly faced with challenges to overcome.”

A soccer fanatic who’s followed FC Cincinnati since the team’s formation in 2015, he’s thrilled to get to work in the club’s facilities and meet current and former players including Omar Cummings and Corben Bone.

“I also enjoy giving back and working with kids,” he said. “Seeing their excitement with the game I love makes the long hours of coaching worth it.”

When he graduates in December 2024, Jacob plans to pursue a master’s degree and hopes to work for a college athletic program or professional sports organization.

ONU, he says, helps students like him find the ideal match in internships and careers.

“It’s engraved in ONU’s culture that it’s a place that furthers each student’s education and prepares them for the real world.”
