CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Students in the criminal justice major will:

  1. Define the major components of the American Criminal Justice system and associated terms.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the nature of crime and the historical and philosophical foundations of criminological theory and thought.
  3. Analyze the major issues facing the criminal justice system and the impact on criminal justice policy.
  4. Describe careers in the field of criminal justice and understand the roles of criminal justice actors as preparation for the workplace or advance study.
  5. Critique and examine scholarly work related to the field of criminal justice.
  6. Demonstrate critical thinking and writing through the creation of a criminal justice-related capstone project.

 

 

 

 

HISTORY 

Students in the history major will:

  1. Demonstrate the skills of a historian by conducting meaningful research using primary and secondary sources, including archival and database sources and other innovative sources, such as material culture, photos, film, television, etc.
  2. Demonstrate ability to competently craft written history using professional research methods.
  3. Demonstrate ability to effectively present historical research to an extra-departmental audience.

 

 

 

 

POLITICAL SCIENCE

Students in the political science major will:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of key concepts and theoretical frameworks in American, comparative, and international politics.
  2. Demonstrate competency in critical and analytical reasoning skills necessary for the study of political science.
  3. Communicate effectively through strong writing and oral skills.
  4. Demonstrate competency with tools underlying modern social science research, including statistical or qualitative analysis.
  5. Participate as a civically engaged member of society.

 

 

 

 

SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION

Students in the social studies education major will:

  1. Demonstrate competency in the content areas of the Social Studies – History, Political Science, Geography, Economics, Psychology, and Sociology.
  2. Demonstrate acquisition of the National Council for the Social Studies 10 Themes for teaching the social studies.
  3. Complete the requirements for entry into the Center for Teacher Education.
  4. Demonstrate successful application of the National Council for the Social Studies 10 Themes for teaching the social studies.
  5. Demonstrate competency in acquiring the skills of the historian. Those include the demonstrated ability to conduct research, and to craft that research into written work that answers significant historical questions.
  6. Demonstrate ability to effectively present historical research to an extra-departmental audience.
