Jayanti Geerets found her way to Ohio Northern University from the Netherlands thanks to the encouraging stories of ONU alumna Katrina Thompson, BA ’05, JD ’08.
Katrina’s family hosted Jayanti when she was an exchange student at Marysville High School in 2021-22. The more stories Katrina recounted of her “amazing experiences” at ONU, the more Jayanti became convinced she should check out the campus.
Jayanti is now thriving as a sophomore early childhood education major with a TESOL minor.
The natural beauty of ONU’s campus fills her with peace every day, and she especially appreciates the campus’s autumn splendor. Often after a busy day, she and her close friends climb to the top bleacher seats at Dial-Roberson Stadium to unwind by watching the spectacular sunsets.
“And there are so many squirrels on campus, and I absolutely love squirrels!” she said. (Squirrels aren’t as prevalent in the Netherlands).
Jayanti is involved in the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Teachers of Tomorrow, Parks and Rec, and Polar Pace, a new running club.
While growing up in the Netherlands, she helped coach children ages 2-12 in gymnastics, figure skating, and volleyball. Watching the children grow and develop inspired her to become a teacher.
“Seeing that lightbulb click and the students gain confidence,” she said, is incredibly fulfilling.
After graduation in May 2027, Jayanti is considering teaching at an international school. Her adventurous spirit compels her to experience new cultures. It’s what brought her to Ohio in the first place. And even though she’s far from home, the Thompsons have become her second family. She visits them frequently and stays with them during longer school breaks.
ONU also feels like home, she said.
“Everyone knows my background and they’re so genuine and nice,” she said. “You know the people here care.”
