When Kaden Miller graduates in May 2027 from Ohio Northern University with a double major in mechanical engineering and chemistry, he’ll be ready for graduate school and a career, whichever he chooses.
The Kenton, Ohio, resident, and Kenton High School graduate said ONU’s esports program, in particular, is preparing him for success. He competes in Rocket League (car soccer) and has three practices and two matches each week, as his class schedule allows.
Kaden appreciates the “many passionate people involved in the esports program, including director Troy Chiefari” and points out the various opportunities for students to gain valuable experience.
“Many don’t realize the numerous jobs available through competitive gaming. ONU’s program gives us so many chances to develop skills and connections that can extend into career opportunities.”
Kaden is both a player and a game manager, the latter of which has helped him develop management skills. He appreciates, too, the many friends he’s made through the program.
His most memorable moments from his esports participation have been during tournaments and include: “Playing on a stage with lights, music and commentators; playing a championship match with .0 seconds on the clock with a final shot to win the game as commentators go nuts and the whole team jumps up shaking with adrenaline; and knowing we won our league and another trophy for the program.”
To students contemplating playing esports at ONU, Kaden says, “Whether you like playing video games or not, there are areas for anyone to be involved. Our team learns marketing, management, finance, graphic design and more.”
